Some Problems Of Using Granite

By Anita Ortega

Granite is one of the most used rock in industrial and commercial construction together with marble and other types of rocks. It is an igneous combined with quartz and feldspars and other mono rocks. Granite tampa florida mostly appears as a dark or light grey stone and mostly used as tiles, grave markers, sculpture and stone tables.

Though it is one of the most used, you still have to know some problems that you will surely encounter whenever you decide to have it on your project. Well this is for you to decide whether to continue or look for another type. But these problem though do not occur at the same time but only depends on how you take good care of it.

When it is overly exposed with water, its surface swells, this is to say that this one is not ideal when the project involves water exposure. If the swelling is left unattended, the next will be exfoliation and delamination of its surface which will cause the thinning of it. Though there are chemical that could make it resist but not powerful enough to last long.

Another thing is that in the middle of the work, it could have the tendency to chip and crack which may cause delay, postponement or worse cancellation of the project. Its sensitivity to machinery is very high so if you still desire to have it due to some factors, the only thing you could do is to be very careful.

When it is already installed in your bathroom, kitchen, or anywhere, time will come that white substances will appear like big maps of continent. This reaction is called efflorescence which is usually caused by some sort chemical reaction between the chemicals used in such stone and those from the cleaning agents.

If granite is left uncovered and it is always exposed in air or placed outdoor, surely its surface will erode. This case can be compared to the case of the great sphinx of Egypt in which you can see some deep lines on it which was once thought to be cause by water but then it is caused by air. This is because granite is not made of only one substance but different types.

Flaking and Peeling, flaking mostly cause by thawing and freezing cycles which can cause water exposure to its surface. The exfoliation and delamination is more affective than those in blistering. The latter is the process of flaking away of the surface of the rock. Usually comes out into thin strips which usually caused by improper masonry such as putting chemical covers.

Staining, this one cannot be considered as a natural phenomenon of the rock but this is one of the most avoided problems for once this will be stained, you can no longer regain its natural beauty. And you will be doing some stain removal which can cause another set of problems. Usually this happens when bird drops their waste, iron and steel connectors will rust, graffiti and other sort of vandalism, dust and dirt due to pollution and lack of routine maintenance.
