You need to have some resources and tools to help you such as tracking software. It is through testing that you will discover what works and what does not.

You can choose any aspect of your page or site to test but there needs to be a good reason for doing it. How fast this goes depends on the volume of traffic your site receives.

Burn this in your head that the only kind of visitors you ever want are those that are highly targeted to your niche. There is never a guarantee that you will never make mistakes, but you can reduce the number you do make.
