Requirements To Obtain EMDR Certification

By Eugenia Dickerson

If you wish to use EMDR as part of your practice, you have several training options available to you. If you do not have any experience in this field at all, you will need to commence your training program with the Basic Training program, prior to application for EMDR certification.

Once you have completed the basic training, you will have the opportunity to apply for EMDR certification. This requires a certain level of experience and the fulfillment of certain criteria. The application for the certificate requires the successful completion of the Basic Training program. You will have to provide a certificate to indicate that you have completed this training program.

You should be able to provide proof of a certification or registration as a professional in the mental health field. A photocopy of the documents that show you are able to practice independently need to be submitted with your application.

You need to have a minimum of two years' experience in your particular field of practice. This should be related to the field specified on your certificate, license or registration as a professional. You will be required to provide documentation which has been notarized to support your statement of the experience you have in your specific practice specialty. In the event that you do not have documentation to this effect, you can write out the statement that you have at least two years' experience and have that particular document notarized.

You should have conducted a minimum of 50 EMDR sessions with a minimum of 25 clients. This pre-requisite requires documentation to prove that you have this experience and the documents should be notarized. Once again, you do have the opportunity to write that you have fulfilled this requirement and have that particular document notarized accordingly. It is possible for you to combine your two years' experience and minimum sessions' declaration and have it notarized as a single document.

To qualify for the certification, you need to have received at least 20 consultation hours from an Approved Consultant in the field. The consultant will have to provide you with adequate documentation listing the number of individual consultation and group consultation hours you received. If these hours were received from more than a single consultant, you will need to obtain documentation from each of the consultants.

A minimum of 10 hours should be individual consultation and the balance could be via a small group consultation. The number in the groups may not exceed 8 participants at any one time. The eligibility of the hours is limited to the consultations you received after the completion of the basic training program.

It is necessary for you to obtain recommendation letters from the Approved Consultants which refer to your use of the service while you were consulting with them. This is required as an attachment to your EMDR certification application. Letters of recommendation are required from both your colleagues and your peers regarding your EMDR use in practice. You also have to provide certificates of completion of further education undertaken in EMDR. The number of hours of further study should not be below 12. Your completion of the Basic Training program does not qualify for this requirement. There are many approved training programs that you are able to undertake that will suffice for this requirement.
