When Caitlin Crawford landed an internship with the Dallas Cowboys, it was truly a dream come true for this young woman, who happens to be from Dallas herself and has been a fan of the team for a long time. At the time, Crawford was attending the University of Oklahoma's broadcasting and electronic media program, from which she graduated with a degree in 2013.
In order to grab the attention of those in charge of choosing interns, Caitlin realized that it was important to show them just what she was capable of, that would set her apart from the rest, so she submitted her best produced articles and they were impressed. She was given a phone interview, and the rest is history.
As a word of advice to others who hope to follow in Crawford's footsteps, she says it's a good idea if one is interested in pursuing this career path, that he or she focus on becoming increasingly comfortable in front of the camera. It's also very important to have strong and convincing written communication skills, as well as being able to produce excellent video work and possessing technical savvy.
Not only did Crawford get the chance to become more at ease in front of the camera, but she was also given plenty of opportunities to practice the technical knowledge she had gained at school. She applied her video editing experience using the software programs and applications she had learned how to use, and felt really honored when they for her assistance in operating a new playback system that no one else had experience running.
Caitlin knew it was a good idea to be well prepared for her internship, so she went about doing her homework and learning all she could about the team's history, players, staff, and game scores. She was able to enjoy two summers in this internship position when classes were not in session, and they even invited her to help produce other features during her holidays.
Crawford's work days as an intern were filled with variety. Sometimes she would be interviewing players, and would need to keep a flexible schedule as they would show up at various times since it was during the off-season. Covering and producing numerous televised shows, script and feature development were amongst her typical duties each day.
Crawford believes that anyone who wishes to someday end up with an opportunity like hers should be sure that he or she possesses certain qualities that are considered valuable to the Dallas Cowboys. These traits include a strong work ethic, being a self-starter who can generate innovative ideas, carry out careful research for assignments, and shows perseverance and the ability to learn from mistakes.
Caitlin Crawford is very grateful for the experience she had working with the Dallas Cowboys and she one day hopes to have a career in sports broadcast journalism. Having this unique opportunity to put on her resume along with active participation in her school's newscasting department, her chances of obtaining a fulfilling position with a sports organization or news station are quite good.
