Methods Used In Production Of Structural Foam

By Jaclyn Hurley

Structural foam is a term that is commonly used to refer to thermoplastic injection molding. These are components that have been made from the molding process and which tend to have core that is cellular. A cellular surface is one where the outer surface is usually denser than the accompanying inner layers.

Typically, there are certain materials that are used. The materials will then result in the production of products such as business machine housings. Other products include container pallets and point of sale displays. Business machine chassis components are also produced using this particular type of molding.

Production can be done using any one of four main methods. The main methods include use of low pressure, combination of different molding tools, and even conventional molding tools. Typical molding process can also be used during the production phase.

When it comes to the low pressure process, different dedicated injection machines will be used. The machines are used to introduce a steady stream of gas in to plastic that has already been melted. The melted plastic is usually found in a molding tool. Once the gas has been introduced, the plastic component will then form based on the shape that had been used.

Molding machines are also used in producing different kinds of plastics. Blowing agents will be introduced in to small granules of molten plastic. This molten plastic will be producing some heat. This heat will make all the blowing agents that have been introduced to react with each other.

Large moldings can easily be produced from existing typical moldings. What will happen is that low amounts of pressure will be applied to these items. Once completed, the finished product may have a rough and streaky surface. If the surface is not ideal, filing may be necessary in order to make it smoother.

Mold tools can be made in to lighter grade materials using low cavity pressure fill. The materials will often include items such as cast aluminum and cast steel. Due to this, the costs associated with this process are much cheaper as compared to the other methods.

This kind of foam comes with a number of benefits. For instance, it can be used to replace concrete, wood and even metal. This replacement would bring about a significant reduction in the costs incurred while resulting in increased productivity.

Injection molding is another method used in production of plastics. If compared to structural molding, you will notice that the latter is more effective. All the products produced using these methods are of a thicker nature. They are also sturdier thereby making them more effective.

Another advantage is seen in the type of machines that are used. The systems commonly known as front runner systems are easier to adjust allowing for different types of flows. They can also be assembled and dissembled very quickly. All this is done with the intention of meeting the different types of part requirements in place.
